Hello loves,

The time has come to tell you why I decided to undergo microblading, to retell my experience with the process and to answer some of your questions.

It doesn’t matter if you like them arched and feathered or straight and bold, eyebrows are arguably the most important facial feature we have. Unfortunately, I did not know this while growing up in the 90s. It was cool back then to have thin eyebrows! It was the IN thing. I mean come on…ALL the Spice Girls had thin eyebrows! As a result, most of us started plucking out our eyebrows a little too much. Sadly over the years, in my case, my eyebrows never fully regrew again. I tried everything; every pencil, powder, pigment, gel, and stencil at Sephora and my brows were still sparse.

It wasn’t long ago when I started to hear about microblading. A process that provides a natural (looking) semi-permanent eyebrow for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in over plucked brows and well, I did it. I microbladed my eyebrows. Whooooaaaa!!

What is microblading?

Unlike a regular tattoo, microblading is a form of “semi-permanent tattoo artistry” where pigment is implanted under your skin with a manual handheld tool instead of a machine. It is the drawing of hair-like strokes to mimic natural hairs in your brows. Each hair-like stroke, drawn one at a time.

What is the process of microblading?

During the first hour of the procedure, the specialist removes any eyebrow make up and proceeds to measure your eyebrows and eye relation to create the best-customized shape for you. Once the shape is chosen, the specialist will draw the suggested shape in with removable pencil. Then, the client can either approve or point out his/her preferences. That’s the longest part and the most important step.

Before the microblading begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area to minimize discomfort, followed by an anesthetic.

Is microblading painful?

Pain is relative. Some feel more than others. You feel it, but it’s not unbearable. Some may feel a slight discomfort, some say it is relatively painless. For me, it felt like getting a small scratch in every stroke.

How long does the procedure last?

The entire procedure lasts about two hours.

Are touch ups needed?

Yes. The healing process is different for everyone, and it takes between two and three weeks. A follow-up touch up after healing is recommended. (In my case, this first touch up is included with my microblading procedure.)

After that, the pigmentation will need to be retouched every 6-12 months. If touch ups are not done, the pigmentation will just fade away entirely on its own.

How long does this semi-permanent make up last?

Depending on the skin and lifestyle (meaning, if you exfoliate your eyebrows or you are under the sun a lot). It is suggested to come back for touch-ups once every six months.

Is there down time after microblading?

No. The best part about the technique is that there is no down time. Your new set of brows will be ready for a selfie immediately after the process. However, aftercare is essential. That means protecting freshly bladed brows from all moisture–no sweaty workouts or washing your face with water. I experienced itching and redness during the first week (totally normal), which Aquafor alleviated. Also, the brows will look slightly darker at first, but the color will fade 30 to 40 percent.

Are microbladed brows high maintenance?

No. Microbladed brows are low maintenance. After healing, you can rub them and enjoy swimming. No special care is required, except for a brief touch-up once a year.

Is it worth it and would you do it again?

Yes. It has been worth it. I no longer have to worry about my eyebrows being rubbed off while hugging my kids (and we mommas know how that is!). Also, my time spent getting ready in the a.m. has been cut down to half. I literally just apply mascara and blush and I am out the door in no time.

How much does it cost?

The smudge-proof solution will cost you anywhere between $450 and $700. But waking up every morning with perfect brows is totally worth it. Always make sure to do your research and see an experienced microblading specialist.
